Job Description
Software Systems Engi MM

Job Summary
Our team is seeking an enthusiastic software developer to help us build custom software applications to maintain Sandia's complex IT environment. We are responsible for developing software for a wide audience; some products may be utilized by the entire corporation, whereas other applications are used primarily by smaller more focused user bases. We pride ourselves on maintaining customer focus through user stories, personas and frequent acceptance testing. We begin writing code early in a project's life cycle and iterate until what we have developed meets the customer's needs. We feel that our smaller team size is directly responsible for our success within the laboratories. Each member has a basic understanding of each of our applications, but has specialization that they bring to the table. To ensure software quality we utilize agile development practices that include continuous integration, test-driven development and paired programming. All team members are involved and empowered to make decisions. We believe that great software is developed through collaboration, even when we are not pairing we support each other with a culture that encourages developer questions and communication. Team members are expected to research and implement new technologies, which includes personal interest research that may not have immediate project applicability. To that end developers on our team are encouraged to attend relevant conferences and training. This emphasis allows for flexibility in the software, frameworks and processes we utilize to deliver outstanding software. As a result our team is often one of the first to introduce new development concepts to the laboratories. We primarily develop web applications that utilize modern web standards, frameworks, technologies and libraries; key attention is paid to user experience and design. We also commonly leverage pre-existing software libraries, and take part in the open source community. Investigates, designs, develops, tests, documents, and analyzes software systems and applications. Develops new programs and subprograms, as well as enhancements, modifications, and corrections to existing software. Prepares concepts and prototypes for information system software solutions or for specialized software domains and evaluates the cost-effectiveness of these concepts. Implements software solutions that may be commercial-off-the-shelf or internally developed. Evaluates interfaces between hardware and software, operational requirements, and characteristics of overall system. Applies software engineering principles, tools, and advanced techniques to develop and support applications, including software development methodologies, database design methodologies, programming languages, source code control for release management, and disaster recovery methodologies. Involved in planning of system and development deployment as well as responsible for meeting software compliance and quality standards.

Primary Job Duties
Develops new programs and subprograms, as well as enhancements, modifications, and corrections to existing software. Develops requirements, workflow and systems analysis. Establishes standards for development and maintenance of new and existing products. Applies strategic thinking to deliver user-experience solutions with a focus on user needs and business goals. Uses judgment to suggest solutions that balance customer needs, business constraints, and technological realities. Creates and guides the design of user experiences and interface designs for software features and products. Participates in defining interfaces between software systems. Applies standard software engineering practices in the development of the software solutions. Participates in defining and may participate in performing software build, release, and installation procedures. Documents work and results. Develops test plans and performs testing. Collaborates effectively with designers, researchers, engineers, product managers, marketers, and other team members. May be responsible for developing or executing software development project plans, budgets, and schedules. Researches and evaluates new software technologies. Stays current with new technologies and industry trends and best practices.
