    • Want to work with kind and brilliant people who take pride in their work, without the ego?

    • Want to work at a company where your code will get into production every week and impact the lives of millions of happy users all over the world?

    • Want to work in that fun, smart, relaxed start-up atmosphere that’s irresistible to the most interesting doers in Toronto?

    Yes? Read on.

FreshBooks is seeking an awesome Development Team Lead who has experience building web applications and building a high performing team to do an even better job of it. This is a hands-on coding role: with us, you will help build brand new features and update existing ones in our consumer-facing cloud accounting application. We build a product that helps our users earn their living and we’re proud of that. If you’re committed to great work and great teamwork, and are constantly looking for ways to improve the systems you’re responsible for, we’re dying to meet you.

You'll work on an Agile team as an ally to your product manager and a leader amongst 4 or 5 coding peers, ensuring a shared focus on delivering customer value, quality code, and technical innovation. Along with your senior-level coding duties, you'll regularly work with other team leads, architects, product managers, and development managers to help curate what your team works on next, and how it fits into the overall FreshBooks technical vision. Most of our software is written in PHP, Python, and JavaScript. We also use tools and technologies like Ember.js, RabbitMQ, Redis, Elasticsearch, Puppet, and Jenkins CI. We believe in using the best tool for the job (while maintaining a slight bias toward the tools the team knows the best). While we value experience with the tools above, we know that smart developers are great learners, too.

    We collaborate...

We work in an open environment; no cubicles or offices. We closely follow Agile Scrum and rely on collaboration for success. We also collaborate across the office; regular hackoffs are a part of our culture. Developers join forces with coworkers across the company to pitch and prototype projects that improve our product, our culture, or are just plain fun.

    We ship...

Shipping is at the forefront of our engineering practice. We rely on continuous integration and use automated testing to ensure our product is always shippable.

    We value our people...

We recognize and reward ingenious work. We all have real lives, and respect their balance. We all have a voice that is heard throughout the company. We always make time for fun, and have one of the most unique, employee-led cultures out there. Join the FreshBooks choir or a class in the gym, organize a gaming night, teach a dev lunch and learn, or use a paid volunteer day to share your skills with the community.

Salaries are competitive and compensation packages include stake in the company.

Join a dedicated team that believes we can change the world by making the web more usable for people with diminished vision and other difficulties with reading, such as dyslexia. We work smart, play hard and make a life-changing product that helps people everyday.

Our product takes full advantage of recent HTML5, SVG, CSS and DOM techniques available in modern browsers. If you enjoy coding for the very latest browsers and pushing the web to its limits, this job is for you. But you don’t need to know it all — after all we’re inventing this as we go and everyone here is constantly learning. Sometimes it amazes us just how powerful the web as a platform can be.

You’ll be part of a startup culture that’s backed by an industry leader with 20 years of success. The right person for this job is a creative thinker who thrives in an agile and open office environment, asks questions and voices their opinion.

    Job Summary

We are looking for someone who loves to code, cares about user experience and wants to make a difference in the world. We are a small team and every member serves a vital role.

What we really need from you

You enjoy writing well-structured, efficient, self-descriptive code. We put pure coding ability above the specifics of the web, because knowledge of the latest web techniques is rare, and can be learned by any skilled programmer.

    • Knowledge of JavaScript and modern web development. Again, we care more about pure programming ability, but if you’re already great at JS it’s obviously a plus.

    • A desire to code for the modern web and push browsers to their limits.

    • Excellent communication skills —we’re more of a jazz band than an orchestra. You need to be able to play your role without someone looking over your shoulder and telling you exactly what to do. You’ll need to proactively leverage the team’s knowledge, communicating problems you face or solutions you’re thinking about.

    • The ability to write elegant code combined with the creativity to find solutions others may not have thought of

    • You love modular code and think about the high level organization of code – either you’re already an architect or aspire to become one.

    • The right balance between perfectionism and getting stuff done.

    • If you use prepackaged solutions like jQuery, you understand what’s under the covers.

    • Self-motivated with a passion for what you do.

    • 5+ years professional coding experience.

    What we can offer you

    • Competitive compensation based on experience

    • Health care that goes far beyond the typical company plan

    • 100% matching 401k

    • Flexible schedule

    • A location that’s just steps from the Alewife T station with free parking

    • Informal environment with foosball, nerf battles, chess and lots of jokes (sometimes humorous)

    • Great cafeteria run by Whole Foods

    • Free on-site exercise gym
